Junglelord Says…

October 13, 2009 at 23:23 3 comments

It’s been nearly six months since my eye-rolling first interview with Junglelord. Today he summoned me in again, via telephone, on the first minute of my first day back to work.

Junglelord: Hello, Katie. Where’d you go for that conference again?

Me: Melbourne. Good thing there were no dust storms or typhoons or earthquakes there.

J: (chuckles) Well, I’m glad you came back in one piece. We need to talk about the next posting.

Me: Yeah… I kinda heard… I’m staying, aren’t I? (Background info: I’d applied to go to a different department in November)

J: Yes. The training comm head says you don’t need to change department, so you’re staying put.

Me: (thinks: F) OK. (thinks: F F F F F)

J: So whose ward would you like to go to?

Me: (thinks: eh? Since when do I get a choice in such things? This is a trick question, right? OK, must think fast and reply intelligently) Huh?

J: (Patiently) Would you like to stay in your current ward?

Me: NO. (thinks: that was an easy one; mine is the only ward that admits every. Frigging. Day)

J: So there are four other wards you can choose from. (waves at a list on his white board)

Me: (brain finally kickstarts – it’s not bloody fair to drop this bloody poser on me first thing in the morning – only Monty’s and Orange’s are viable choices. Decides to look troubled) Well… how should I put this…

J: (Patiently) OK. Who can you not work with?

Me: Uh… Kimchi (high-anxiety and mega-decibel). And Duck (a certain foreign talent).

J: Why Kimchi?

Me: We… have… different… uh, working styles.

J: OK. And Duck?

Me: I… cannot understand anything he says.

J: Ah. The accent?

Me: Yes.

J: Fair enough.

Me: Hee.

J: Well then. How about Monty? I’ve heard that you two get along. Is that true? Do you get along? Work together without fighting?

Me: (suppresses laughter) Never fought with him. Should be OK.

J: Really? You sure?

Me: Yeah.

J: OK then. That’s settled.

Me: Uh. I’ll also need some time off to study for my exam. And write my thesis. And go to the Buffalo Farm to collect data for my thesis. (cringes – the last time I said something like this, he warned me not to skip off to watch a movie instead)

J: OK. That’s important. It shouldn’t be a problem. I will approve longer periods of leave for you from January onward if you want.

Wow, what happened? That was actually a decent conversation, in which I actually got some things I wanted. No threats about low grades or punishment for naughty behaviour. Wowow. I only hope that what he said will come through. Perhaps I shouldn’t celebrate too early, but wait to see the actual outcome of things.

Still, this rare conversation deserves a place here for the sake of posterity.

My blog-name is Katie but I will not respond if you call me that in real life because it's not my real name. Yes, I do practise virtual-world paranoia. No, I do not enjoy stalkers. But I do enjoy writing and having folks reading said writing, so welcome to my world. It's nice to meet you.

Don’t say I didn’t say this…

Disclaimers: 1) I cannot help but bitch about work sometimes, but everything here comes under the realm of personal remarks, and nothing here is said in my professional capacity. Nor does anything here reflect the opinion of the institutions that employ me. This is just me shooting off. 2) Most identities have been anonymized, particularly those of folks I know on a personal basis. Same goes for my workplaces. However, commercial and public places and figures remain named. Otherwise some things just wouldn't make sense. 3) Links and sources have been provided where appropriate and possible. They are not meant to challenge anyone's ownership. If this causes any discomfort or offence, please let me know.
